DescriptionThe whole story▼
This part exists for a rule that does not apply in Germany. Akrapovic states its purpose plainly: to comply with North American off-road regulations, a set of spark arresters is available for the US market. Anyone browsing from Europe should read that sentence before the price.
Key Features
- A set of spark arresters, for the CRF1000L Africa Twin
- Built to satisfy North American off-road regulations
- Offered by Akrapovic for the US market
- Covers the Africa Twin and the Adventure Sports of 2016 to 2019
- Not a road approval and not a European requirement
What a Spark Arrester Does
It is a screen inside the exhaust outlet that catches carbon particles before they leave the silencer still glowing. On dry ground a single hot particle is enough to start a fire, which is why land-management agencies in the western United States require arresters on machines used off-road.
It is a fire-safety device, not an emissions or a noise part, and it has nothing to do with type approval.
Who Actually Needs One in Europe
Almost nobody as a legal matter — no equivalent general requirement exists in Germany. Three situations make it relevant anyway.
A motorcycle being shipped to or ridden in North America. An organised event whose regulations borrow American practice, which some rally-raid and desert competitions do. And a rider who simply wants one on a bike used on dry forest tracks in summer, where the risk is real even where the rule is not.
Outside those, this is a part to leave on the shelf, and saying so is more useful than selling it as something it is not.
A Set, Not a Single Screen
The Africa Twin of this generation carries a twin-outlet silencer, and the set contains an arrester for each. That is what the SET in the part number means, and it is the reason the price is what it is for what looks like a very small component.
Which Africa Twin
The 998 cc CRF1000L, both the standard Africa Twin and the Adventure Sports, from 2016 to 2019. The later 1,084 cc CRF1100L is a different motorcycle with a different exhaust and takes different parts.
It Is Also a Serviceable Part
A spark arrester screen collects what it is designed to collect, and a clogged one restricts the exhaust badly. Where the rules require an arrester they generally also expect it to be cleaned, and a machine used regularly on dust needs that doing far more often than an annual service interval suggests.
It Costs a Little Power
Any screen in the gas path is a restriction. Akrapovic publishes no figure for how much, so none is quoted here — but a rider fitting one should expect a small loss rather than none at all, and that is the trade the regulation asks for.
Road Approval
Not applicable in the usual sense. A spark arrester is a fire-safety component and carries no EC, ECE or ABE approval. Whether the Africa Twin is road legal is decided by its exhaust system, not by this.
