Akrapovic builds three complete systems for the Kawasaki 650 twin and two of them are road legal. This is the third. It carries no catalytic converter, needs a remap to run properly, and cannot be used on public roads — and in exchange it is the lightest and the strongest of the three by a clear margin.

The Choice Between Three
S-K6R12-HEGEHT covers 2017 to 2020 with EC type approval. S-K6R14-HEGEHT/2 covers 2021 onwards, also approved, with the catalytic converter built into the system. This part number spans both generations because it has no converter to match to a particular emissions standard.
Anyone who rides the bike to the circuit wants one of the other two. This one is for a machine that arrives on a trailer.
Four Point Three Kilograms
Halving the weight of an exhaust system is unusual, and the reason it is possible here is the standard part: Kawasaki's 8.4 kg system carries a large converter box under the engine. The approved Akrapovic systems keep a converter and land at 5.5 and 5.4 kg. Without one, this system reaches 4.1.
The Z650 weighs 192 kg ready to ride. Taking 4.3 kg out of it, most of it low and central, is worth more to a club racer than the horsepower is.
The Remap Is Not Optional
Akrapovic states it plainly. The engine expects back pressure and a converter that are no longer there, and the standard fuelling map will run the bike badly until it is corrected. Budget for the dyno time when you budget for the system.
Euro 5+ and the Warning Light
On machines built to Euro 5+, with two lambda sensors, Akrapovic warns that the engine check light may appear once the ECU notices the catalytic converter's readings have changed. That is expected behaviour rather than a fault, and a proper remap normally settles it.
The system fits only machines whose standard exhaust has two lambda sensors. Older single-sensor bikes are covered by a different part.
Ten Model Years, One Part Number
Kawasaki revised the Ninja 650 and Z650 for 2021 with new bodywork and a Euro 5 engine, and Akrapovic split its road-legal systems at that point. The track system did not need splitting: the mounting points and the exhaust route stayed the same, and without a converter there is no emissions standard to match.
Where the Gains Sit
Three and a half horsepower at 8,500 rpm and four newton metres at 5,800. On a parallel twin that makes 62 PS standard, five per cent more power matters less than the four newton metres do — that is the drive out of a slow corner, and it arrives well below the power peak.
