DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Ducati Hyperstrada 821 is the touring member of the Hypermotard family, with side cases, a taller screen and a more comfortable seat, and many of its owners ride it calmly over long distances. Gentle use sounds easy on brakes, but it brings problems of its own. Accossato's DK053, a floating front disc on a black carrier, 320 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm thick, is listed for the Hyperstrada 821 from 2013 to 2016.
Key Features
- Floating front disc for the Ducati Hyperstrada 821, 2013 to 2016
- 320 mm diameter, 72 mm bore, 4.5 mm thickness
- Friction ring on rivets, black carrier
- Interchangeable with the original equipment disc
- Minimum working thickness printed on each disc
- Supplied as one disc; two are needed at the front
- No German ABE on record, for track use
Construction and Material Quality
The DK053 is a floating disc: its friction ring is riveted to a black carrier with enough clearance to move slightly, so the ring can expand as it heats without distorting the section fixed to the hub. The bore measures 72 mm. Accossato says the disc is interchangeable with the original, and it prints the minimum working thickness on every disc, a limit worth checking before any long trip. The brand credits its disc know-how to Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3.
When the Brakes Are Used Too Gently
A bike that is only ever slowed with light pressure can end up with glazed pads and a disc surface that has lost its bite, so the brake feels wooden and needs more force than it should. Pads that barely move in their calipers for weeks also collect corrosion and dirt at their edges. On a Hyperstrada 821 used mainly for relaxed touring, an occasional run of firm stops on a clear road keeps disc and pads in working order. Look at the discs while you are at it: a uniform, dull finish on the pad track is what you want, while a mirror-like shine or dark smears point to glazing. If firm stops do not bring the feel back, clean the discs, inspect the pads and, if in doubt, renew them together.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's catalogue gives the Hyperstrada 821 of 2013 to 2016 as the application for the DK053. The front brake uses two discs, so two are needed, and the price is per disc. Accossato also lists the thicker DKS053 for the Hyperstrada 821, along with the EDB012 brake lever and the ESD082 clutch lever.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE on record for the DK053 and no type approval, so its use is limited to the track.
Scope of Delivery
One DK053 floating disc with black carrier, without bolts.
