The 850 Sport is the road-biased Tiger: cast wheels, road rubber, a screen and a job description that mostly reads commuting and touring. It looks like the last machine in the range that would want an off-road filter medium. The case for the PM214T12 here has nothing to do with gravel. It is about winter — about the grit spread on the road and thrown back into the air by everything ahead of you, which is the dirtiest air a year-round road motorcycle ever breathes.

The season a road bike gets dirty

Winter road maintenance puts crushed mineral material down by the lorry load, and traffic spends the following weeks grinding it finer. What is left hangs behind every vehicle as a hard, fine, airborne dust, and a motorcycle ridden all year meets it at exactly the time of year when nobody feels like opening an airbox to look. Gravel tracks are optional and can be avoided. This cannot, not by a bike that is used for getting to work.

What it costs the rest of the year

A good deal, on paper. 560 l/m²/sec against the standard weave's 5,050 is the steepest exchange Sprint Filter offers, and a faired sport tourer spends long stretches at sustained load, which is where an intake restriction is least welcome. Higher retention always means lower flow; the T12 is not a better element than the standard medium but one built for worse air. If the bike is laid up from November to March, the standard weave is the right specification and this is an answer to a question you never ask. If it goes out all winter, the balance moves. Either way, no panel filter makes a standard triple noticeably faster — what changes is what reaches the engine, and how steadily the resistance behaves between cleanings.

Care and cleaning

Salt and grit ask for water more often than dust does. Start with an air line from the clean face outwards, then wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent whenever the winter has left a visible film, rinsing until the water runs clear. A dense mat holds water well, so give it real drying time in moving air — never heat, never a flame — and refit it only once it is dry. It is never oiled.
