A short ladder, and where this rung sits

For everyday riding this airbox is offered two media: the standard weave at 5,050 l/m²/sec and this mat at 1,800. Above them the catalogue lists a racing weave, which is a different proposition again — coarser in aperture, far higher in rated flow, and drawn for a use this machine is unlikely to see in its first years. Between the two that remain, the step is large enough to matter and small enough that neither answer is extreme: riders who stay on sealed roads have theirs in the standard element, riders whose summer includes gravel, farm tracks or the dust of other vehicles have theirs here.

What the trade actually costs

Roughly two thirds of the rated flow, in exchange for holding a great deal more of what is suspended in dry air. Both halves apply every day, including the clean ones — a finer medium is not the better medium, only the one drawn for harder air. And neither of them makes the engine stronger: in an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard 820 RR exactly as strong as it was. What it offers is a steadier intake restriction across the interval and a panel serviced rather than replaced.

Care and cleaning

Clean the PM291P14 with compressed air on the clean face, worked outwards, and give it more time than a woven panel needs — depth-loaded material releases gradually. When air is no longer enough, lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes the job; rinse until the runoff is clear. Dry it in moving air at room temperature and by no other means, because heat destroys a nonwoven invisibly. Refit dry, with nothing sprayed on.
