The air filter is the one service item on a Kawasaki Versys 650 that you have to take out and look at anyway — and the only one that quietly reports on the rest of the engine while you do. It sits at the end of a duct that, on most modern machines, also receives the crankcase breather, so it collects more than road dust: an oily sheen, a lopsided pattern of loading, a clean stripe where a lid is not sealing. None of that reaches the dash, and on a bike bought to cover distance in long days that kind of early warning is worth more than a spare part in the pannier. The Sprint Filter P14 PM163P14 is a dry non-woven element filtering to 14 microns, made to be washed and refitted rather than read once and thrown away.
Key Features
- Nothing to oil: the dry non-woven soaks nothing in and washes nothing out
- 14 microns of filtration, 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow
- Roughly twice the filtering surface other performance filters manage
- The standard Versys 650 airbox takes it unaltered — no modification, no remap
- Compressed air from the clean side is the routine; washed and reused, not binned
- Warranted two years, and built to last the life of the motorcycle
Reading the element
A paper filter is inspected once and binned, which is an odd way to treat a piece of evidence. A washable one can be compared with itself: same cloth, same bike, one season later. An even grey-brown dusting is simply the road. An oily film across the whole face says the breather is carrying more mist than it should, worth following up early. Dust piled heavily in one zone with a clean band beside it usually means the lid or the duct is not sealing — unfiltered air taking a shortcut past a filter you paid for. Two minutes with it in hand tells you that much.
Fourteen microns on a touring twin
Finer cloth holds back more and flows less. That is the whole trade, and it runs one way only: the P08 filters to 80 microns and flows 5,050 l/m²/sec, the P14 to 14 microns and 1,800. Neither is the better filter; they are answers to different air. A Versys 650 spends its days on link roads, gravel-dusted passes and the dry shoulder of a long ride, at loads this 649 twin meets with room to spare: the flow given up sits in a reserve it rarely calls on, while the added retention applies every second the engine runs. A finer medium reaches a given restriction sooner for the same volume of air, which argues for washing it on time rather than against choosing it. And if your Versys is ridden hard, held at full throttle or taken to track days, the P08 is the better balance.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning starts dry: compressed air from the clean side, blown outwards. When that is not enough, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it completely in air — never with heat, never with a flame — and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
