Two labels sit on this page and neither of them describes anyone's riding. The letter in 368E is a factory designation; the catalogue records displacement, model years and the airbox, and nothing that would let anybody say what it stands for. The word Racing in the title is not a verdict either — it is the purpose the price list attaches to this material wherever it appears, on a litre-class superbike as readily as on a 368. What is measured here is two numbers, and they describe a cloth.

Which words were measured and which were chosen

Two figures on this page were measured, and both are properties of fabric rather than of a motorcycle: 85 µm and 15,000 l/m²/sec are true whichever outline the material is cut to. Everything else was chosen by somebody. Zontes chose the letter in the model name and it explains nothing. A price list chose the purpose in the title, filing this weave under racing everywhere it is sold. The shape of an airbox chose the fitment list. A decision made on the chosen words instead of the measured ones is a decision about vocabulary.

The measured numbers, applied to a 368E

A flow rating roughly three times that of the standard element is a limit lifted, not air delivered; the engine still takes what the throttle bodies, the ports and the map hand it, and swapping a panel alters none of them. The mesh, meanwhile, opens from 80 µm to 85, so a fraction more of what the air carries goes past. That is the trade in plain terms. It lands well on a machine ridden at sustained maximum revs in sessions, and badly on one ridden to work. For the second case the standard weave in this same housing is the specification, and it asks a fraction of the outlay.

Care and cleaning

Routine servicing is compressed air, aimed from the clean face outwards so that whatever the weave stopped leaves the way it arrived rather than being pushed through. A greasy film wants lukewarm water and a little mild detergent, rinsed until nothing more washes out. Dry it in room air, slowly, and never with heat of any description, which ruins polyester long before it looks damaged.
