This is the most open weave Sprint Filter builds, and openness on its own is not a feature. It is a decision about how much of what the air carries you are willing to let past, taken in return for volume. The bargain is easiest to defend where the air is controlled and the engine is genuinely short of it. Among Triumph's 400s, the Scrambler 400 X is the one drawn to leave the tarmac now and then — which makes it the one whose air is least likely to be clean.
Key Features
- Dry racing-grade polyester weave at 85 microns, rated for 15,000 l/m²/sec
- The highest throughput of any medium Sprint Filter lists for this airbox
- Openings wider than those of the 80-micron road weave offered for the same motorcycle
- Measured at 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron particles, beside 93.13 per cent for the road weave
- Goes into the untouched series airbox: nothing trimmed, nothing packed out, fuelling left alone
- Washable, reusable, and covered by a two-year guarantee counted from the day of purchase
A wide weave where the surface is loose
Those retention percentages are measured at one particle size, and 100 microns is the coarse end of what an air filter deals with. Further down the scale the width of the opening begins to tell, and the airborne mineral fraction — what hangs behind a wheel on a dry track long after it has passed, the part that does its damage slowly at the rings — is precisely what a wider weave is least equipped to catch. On sealed roads that costs little. On a chassis specified for looser going it is the wrong end of the range to be standing at, whatever the flow number says.
The two elements most 400 X riders want instead
The same housing takes the standard P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec — a tighter weave and already more air than a road-registered 400 will call for — and the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec, for owners whose roads are dusty rather than fast. Finer holds more and flows less, coarser reverses both, and the choice follows the air you ride through rather than a ladder of quality. None of the three turns a standard 400 X into a quicker motorcycle. Headroom of the kind CM267S F1-85 offers needs an engine able to call on it, and a series single of this size cannot.
Care and cleaning
Service it dry. An air line on the inner face, blowing outward, clears most of what a session leaves behind; warm water and a little mild detergent lift whatever stays, and the rinse water should end up clear. Let it dry in still or moving air at room temperature, never with heat or an open flame, and refit it bare — there is no oiling step, so nothing can be drawn off it into the intake. The printed care sheet is available in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Catalogued for the Triumph Scrambler 400 X, 2024 to 2026. One part number answers for three machines built around this airbox; their individual model years are set out in the Fitment tab, where one of them begins later than the others.
