The racing weave has a wider opening than the standard cloth: 85 microns against 80. On a road-registered 401 that difference is unlikely to arrive as more air, because the engine rarely asks for what either material can already pass. It is more likely to arrive as time. A cloth that holds back less has less accumulating in it, so the stretch between one airbox visit and the next should be the longer of the two. That is a modest thing to buy, and it is the honest headline for this part on this bike.
Key Features
- Dry polyester racing weave, 85 microns, rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- The widest opening of the three media drawn for this airbox — it retains the least
- Holds back 95.22 per cent of 100-micron particles in Sprint Filter's own comparison
- Oil-free for its entire life, with nothing to reapply after a wash
- Direct replacement in the standard housing: no modification, no fuelling change
- Two years of warranty, and a service life specified against the motorcycle
The effect a road rider is most likely to meet
Loading is the mirror image of retention. Whatever a medium arrests stays in it until somebody cleans it, so the cloth that arrests less fills more slowly under the same air. Sprint Filter puts no interval on any of its media and this page will not invent one either, but the direction is not in doubt, and on a machine that spends its life on sealed roads it is the practical difference of the three. It is worth weighing against the price: in this family the racing weave costs a good deal more than twice what the standard element does.
What it will not do
It will not make the bike quicker. No element dropped into an unmodified airbox does, and a single homologated inside the A2 category has its ceiling fixed by the engine and its approval long before the intake is reached. Nor is a wider weave an upgrade in filtration; it is deliberately the coarsest of the three, and anyone shopping because of dust needs to go the other way, to the fine nonwoven at 14 microns and 1,800 litres per square metre per second. What all three share is an intake restriction that starts below a paper panel's and comes back to that figure with a clean.
Care and cleaning
Blow the PM293S F1-85 through with an air line held to its clean side, working across the face so the dirt exits where it entered. If the weave still looks loaded, warm water with a mild detergent will finish it — rinse repeatedly, until nothing more discolours the water leaving it. After that, air and patience: no heat source may be used to speed the drying, and the element is refitted only once it is dry throughout. No oil is applied at any stage. The care sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 from 2024 to 2026, in the standard airbox. The compatibility list runs to seven entries across the current Husqvarna and KTM singles and is shown in the Fitment tab. A Svartpilen 401 built up to 2023 belongs to the preceding Sprint Filter code and is not covered here.
