A washable air filter is the one service item on a Tiger 800 that can be lost to good intentions. The maintenance schedule lists the air filter as a part to be renewed, and a workshop working down that list does precisely what it says: out comes the element, in goes a new one. If it was a Sprint Filter, a part that never needed replacing has just been thrown away by a mechanic who did nothing wrong. That is no argument against dealer servicing. It is an argument for one sentence before the keys change hands.
Key Features
- A single layer of dry woven polyester, 80 µm calibrated aperture, thread diameters from 22 microns
- 5,050 l/m²/sec of rated flow, Sprint Filter's standard answer for mixed road and track duty
- No oil anywhere in the element, so nothing is carried through to the sensor or the throttle bodies
- Close to double the filtering surface of rival performance elements, in the unmodified housing
- A straight swap into the series airbox: the box stays as Triumph built it, the map is left alone
- Serviced with air rather than money, made to last the machine, two years of cover from purchase
Making the instruction stick
Three habits keep the part where it belongs. Put the request in writing on the job card rather than mentioning it at the counter, because whoever books the bike in is rarely the person who opens the airbox. Ask, as a standing rule, for replaced parts to be handed back; that costs nothing and makes a mistaken swap visible the same day rather than a year later. And record the fitment in the service book at the first inspection afterwards, so it travels with the machine, not in your memory.
Why the schedule says renew
The interval in the manual is not wrong, it belongs to a different part. A cellulose element cannot be brought back to its original state, so the only maintenance available to it is replacement and the plan was written accordingly. Change the medium and the verb changes with it while the interval stays put: on the XCx, XR and XRX the inspection still falls due at the same mileage, and the PM124S comes out, gets its air and goes back in. This element does not make a standard 800 triple faster. It gives the engine an intake restriction that keeps returning to its low starting value instead of climbing to the next service.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the routine work: hold the line to the clean side and drive the dirt out through the dirty face. Where damp or salted roads have left more than dust, warm water and a mild detergent take care of the rest, rinsing until the water runs clear. Drying happens in still air and takes as long as it takes — no heat gun, no flame, nothing refitted while it is damp. There is no oiling step afterwards. The full sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Built for the Triumph Tiger 800 XCx, XR and XRX of 2015 to 2019. The same element appears on three listings here and reaches back to the first 800 Tigers of 2011. Designations changed more than once across those years, so check yours against the Fitment tab before ordering.
