Clip-ons, a single seat and a chromed tank make the V7 III Racer look like it wants to be revved, and the 744 cc twin underneath is happy to be, up to a point. The point is somewhere around six thousand, which means the whole enjoyable part of this motorcycle sits between three and six — a band you cross constantly on a good road, in short bursts, with the throttle moving rather than held. A Sprint Filter P08 PM138S is aimed squarely at that band, because that is where an intake either keeps up or does not.
Key Features
- An 80-micron woven aperture flowing 5,050 l/m²/sec on Sprint Filter's bench
- Dry from first fitting to last cleaning; no coating is involved at any stage
- Roughly double the working area of a normal performance panel in the same box
- Fits the unmodified airbox and needs no remap to go with it
- Washable, reusable and intended to outlast the rest of the motorcycle
- Two years of manufacturer cover, counted from the purchase date
Why pickup, not peak, is the measurement that matters
Restriction is normally quoted as a single number, which makes it sound like a constant. It is not. The drop across a filter rises with the volume going through it, so a half-loaded panel is nearly transparent at a steady cruise and expensive the moment you ask for everything at once. On a bike ridden the way a Racer invites, that moment arrives every few seconds. The engine management simply fuels whatever air turns up, so nothing feels faulty — the roll-on just goes soft, and it does so slowly enough that None of which is a power claim: a panel dropped into a series airbox does not make a V7 quicker, and the honest promise is only that the pickup stops fading.
A café racer is not a museum piece
Bikes with bars this low tend to be used hard and cleaned often, which suits a panel that is serviced with the compressor already hanging on the garage wall. Off, blown through, back on: the airbox lid is the only thing between you and the job. Over a few summers of that, the difference against a paper cartridge is not really about performance at all. It is that the Racer accumulates riding rather than a stack of dirty cardboard frames on the shelf behind it.
Care and cleaning
Blow it from the inside face towards the dirty one, letting the debris exit by its own route. A wash is for the occasions air is not enough: hand-warm water, a mild detergent, and enough rinses that the run-off finally goes clear. After that, patience — air-dry it fully at room temperature and keep it clear of heaters, hot engines and open flame, all of which spoil a woven medium invisibly. The PM138S is refitted exactly as dry as it came out. Sprint Filter's servicing sheet sits under Downloads on this page.
