Eight Hundred and Three Cubic Centimetres
The air-cooled Desmodue making 73 horsepower, in a steel trellis with a wide bar and a low seat. It is the simplest motorcycle Ducati sells and that is entirely the point.
A Whole Sub-Brand
Ducati spun the Scrambler off with its own showrooms, its own clothing line and its own logo. It brought in buyers who had never considered the marque and it worked commercially.
Icon, Nightshift, Desert Sled
The same platform in several distinct characters, each with its own wheels, suspension and colours. Personalisation is the model's entire commercial idea rather than an afterthought.
Three Finishes
Black, red and titanium, grown into the aluminium. On a motorcycle sold on how it looks, the components on the bar carry more weight than they would elsewhere.
Sealed Contacts
Enclosed within a body cut from one block. Scramblers live outdoors and get ridden in whatever the weather offers, which is what actually ends their switchgear.
Simple, and Not Cheap
No riding modes and no electronic throttle on most versions. That simplicity makes the mechanical quality of what is on the handlebar considerably more noticeable.
Ergal 7075
Roughly twice as strong as ordinary machined aluminium. An 800 is a first big Ducati for a great many riders and it goes over in car parks accordingly.
A Low Seat
Ducati kept the Scrambler accessible where the rest of the range is not. It is why the model reaches riders who would never have walked into the showroom otherwise.
Factory Plug
Pre-wired to Ducati's own connector. Nothing is cut and the exchange takes about a quarter of an hour.
