Why Both Halves Are Needed
Unplugging the solenoid alone stores a fault; blanking the head alone leaves the lamp on. Only the pair produces a clean result.
The Complete Job
Electrical half, mechanical half, and the airbox port closed. Anything short of that leaves either a lamp on the panel or a hole in the intake.
Why the System Exists
Emissions legislation counts what leaves the pipe, and injecting fresh air into a hot exhaust port burns leftover hydrocarbons after combustion. It is a measurement strategy rather than an engine improvement.
The Order of Work
Seat, side panels, tank, airbox, then the two components. Everything after that is reassembly, and the whole job is a single evening.
What the Secondary Air System Does
It admits fresh air into the exhaust ports after combustion so that leftover hydrocarbons finish burning in the pipe rather than leaving it. The measurement improves without the combustion changing, which is exactly why removing it costs nothing in power.
Why the Two Halves Belong Together
The solenoid is an electrical component the controller monitors; the reed housing is a mechanical one bolted to the cylinder head. Answering one without addressing the other leaves either a warning on the panel or a plastic box that is going to crack eventually. Both sit behind the same tank and the same airbox, so doing them separately means paying for that access twice.
A Realistic Time Estimate
Allow an evening rather than an hour. On a faired model the bodywork is most of it, on a naked machine the tank and airbox still have to come out, and the two components between them take about twenty minutes. Anybody promised half an hour has been told about the parts and not about the motorcycle.
