DescriptionThe whole story▼
2.4 PS on an adventure bike is a larger gain than most slip-ons manage anywhere, and on the DesertX it comes with 1.8 Nm and a heat shield that Akrapovic redesigned from nothing rather than adapting from another model.
Key Features
- 2.25 kg against the standard 3.38 kg: 1.1 kg and 33.4 per cent less
- 2.4 PS (1.8 kW) more at 9,400 rpm, with peak output rising from 98.9 to 101.2 PS
- 1.8 Nm more at 8,100 rpm
- High-grade titanium outer sleeve over a stainless steel inner structure, with a stainless link pipe
- Carbon fibre end cap and a heat shield designed from scratch for this motorcycle
- Plug-and-play installation with no remapping needed
- EC and ECE type approved
A Heat Shield Drawn for This Bike
Akrapovic states that the heat shield here was designed completely from scratch, and the reason is what a DesertX gets used for. It is a rally-styled machine with a high seat, a passenger perch above the silencer and luggage strapped over both. The shield covers the span a pillion's boot and a drybag actually occupy, rather than the smaller area a road bike would need.
It is supplied with the system. On a part in this class that is worth stating, because on plenty of competitors it is a line item in the accessory catalogue.
Durability as a Design Goal
The construction is deliberately mixed: titanium where the weight is, stainless steel for the inner structure and the link pipe where the heat cycling and vibration are worst. A DesertX spends time on surfaces that shake a bike apart, and an all-titanium system optimised purely for mass would be the wrong answer for it.
Throttle Response
The measured 2.4 PS arrives at 9,400 rpm, but Akrapovic names throttle response as the development priority rather than peak output. On a 937 cc twin ridden on loose ground, how cleanly the engine picks up from a closed throttle decides more than the number at the top of the sheet.
The 937 Engine Is in Several Ducatis — This Part Is Not
Ducati's 937 cc Testastretta appears in the DesertX, the Monster, the Multistrada V2 and the Hypermotard 950. Owners see the shared engine and assume the exhaust parts interchange; they do not. The DesertX carries its silencer high and far back to clear 220 mm of suspension travel and a 21-inch front wheel, and its mounting is unique to that chassis.
If your registration document says Monster, Multistrada or Hypermotard, this is the wrong part — ask us and we will name the right one.
