Hold a woven element up to the light and it tells you something. Hold up a nonwoven and it does not. The P14 catches particles through its thickness rather than on one visible face, so a panel already carrying a serious load can still look much the way it went in. On the Brivido 300R that cuts twice, because the airbox lives under bodywork that has to come off before anyone can look at all. Choosing SM257P14 therefore means choosing a rule for when it gets cleaned.

Reading a medium that gives no signal

A woven sheet gathers its load where you can see it. A depth structure behaves differently: air threads through a mat of fibres and particles are held at various levels inside it, which is how 14 microns is reached without a tighter mesh, and why the outside is a poor witness to the inside. The response is not to look harder but to stop depending on looking. Pick occasions instead — the end of a dry, dusty stretch of the season, the run-up to a winter standing still, any long spell behind traffic on unmade surfaces. On a faired 300, attach the job to work that already has the panels off.

What 14 microns costs

The road weave in this housing filters at 80 microns and is rated at 5,050 litres per square metre per second. This nonwoven filters at 14 and is rated at 1,800. Those figures always move against one another: a structure that stops more passes less. It is a trade, not a league table. Nothing fitted inside a standard airbox makes a 300 single noticeably quicker, and this element is not sold on that. What it offers is a low intake restriction returned to its starting point at every cleaning instead of creeping upward between services, and a part washed rather than bought again.

Care and cleaning

SM257P14 is serviced, not consumed. Compressed air does most of it: aim at the clean side and blow outward, so the load leaves by the way it came in instead of being driven deeper into the mat. When air alone no longer clears it, lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a thorough rinse finish the job. Drying happens in moving air at room temperature — a radiator, a hot air gun or a flame ruins the material in seconds — and it goes back dry and untreated.
