The Shiver 750 was listed from 2007 to 2017 and PM108S covers all of it, which means the bikes this element is bought for today are used bikes, most of them carrying a service history somebody else wrote. That changes what the filter is for. On a new machine it would be an upgrade; on a twin of this age it is one of the few intake parts whose condition you can establish for yourself instead of taking on trust.

Key Features

One dry layer of woven polyester, unoiled when new and left unoiled for good

80 µm at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec — the road and track specification of the range

Threads from ø 22 microns across, which is the fibre gauge and not the mesh opening

Close to twice the working cloth of a typical performance element, in the original frame

Replaces the paper panel directly: standard airbox, standard fixings, no remap

Cleaned rather than consumed, designed for the life of the bike, two years of warranty

The arithmetic of a long ownership

Paper panels look cheap one at a time and rather less so in a row. Over a decade of riding the Shiver gets through a stack of them, and each of those services is a purchase, a part number to chase and a delay whenever the shelf is empty. Polyester replaces the whole sequence with an air line. On an older machine, where parts supply for a discontinued model is a genuine consideration, the appeal has less to do with performance than with not depending on anyone stocking a consumable for a bike that left production years ago.

What you can check and what you cannot

A second-hand bike arrives with unknowns attached. A dirty paper element tells you almost nothing — it might be one service old or five — and there is no way back from whichever it turns out to be. A polyester element is inspected, blown through and refitted, so the intake side simply stops being one of the unknowns. That is the whole of the benefit, and it does not stretch to power: an element sitting in an unmodified airbox will not make a series motorcycle noticeably stronger, on a 750 twin least of all.

Care and cleaning

Servicing PM108S calls for an air line and patience rather than solvents. Work from the clean face and blow outward so the dirt leaves the cloth the way it came in, covering the whole surface evenly. A film that air will not shift comes off in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild washing-up detergent, rinsed until the water runs clean. After that it dries in room air alone — never with a heat gun, on a radiator or near a flame, because heat is what destroys polyester — and it goes back in dry.
