DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-44 is a shock absorber spring rated at 120 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 21040-44
  • Measured spring rate 120 N/mm
  • Free length 160 mm
  • 73 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 51 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

The Numbers That Matter

The 51 mm bore and 160 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 120 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
