LS2 FF817 Challenger II Helmet – Viper White/Blue/Red

The Viper pattern is the busiest LS2 puts on this shell — interlocking shapes that wrap the sides and crown. In white, blue and red with a gloss coat, it is the extrovert of the range.

An HPFC shell in three sizes

Underneath the paint sits high-performance fibreglass composite. It is the material LS2 uses where durability matters more than the last hundred grams, and it keeps this helmet at 1500 g while meeting ECE 22.06.

Eight sizes, three shells. It is the sensible middle ground — not the six-shell extravagance of a race helmet, but far from the one-size-fits-all approach that makes small helmets look inflated.

About the Viper White/Blue/Red finish

Deep blue dominates, with white opening the pattern up and red sharpening the transitions. The gloss finish gives each panel its own highlight, so the graphic reads differently depending on where the sun is. Asymmetric by design — the two sides of the helmet do not match, which is worth knowing if you have a preferred camera side.

Airflow from the top down

Ventilation runs top-down rather than through the chin: intakes on the crown, channels moulded into the EPS, and exhausts at the rear. A breath deflector keeps exhaled air off the visor.

Die Auslässe hinten arbeiten mit dem Unterdruck, der sich bei Fahrt hinter dem Helm bildet. Das funktioniert ab etwa 60 km/h spürbar und ist der Grund, warum sich die Belüftung auf der Landstraße deutlich besser anfühlt als im Stand.

Seeing out

You get an oversized aperture through a hardcoated, UV-resistant screen, sealed by a double-injection gasket. The Pinlock 120XLT MaxVision insert comes as standard, and the visor locks shut with a positive button catch.

The integrated sun visor covers the light conditions a clear visor cannot, and unlike most it is designed to be removed by hand for cleaning or replacement.

Die Doppel-Einspritz-Dichtung ist so ein Detail, das man erst im Regen bemerkt: Statt einer aufgeklebten Gummilippe wird die Dichtung in zwei Materialhärten direkt an die Visieröffnung gespritzt. Sie hält länger und dichtet zuverlässiger als eine nachträglich montierte.

Holding on, and letting go

The chin strap closes with a micrometric metal buckle on a reinforced strap. Emergency-release tabs let the cheek pads be pulled clear at the roadside, and the shell carries a metal certification plate.

Die metallische Prüfplakette ist mehr als Zierde: Sie ist der physische Nachweis der ECE-22.06-Zulassung und wird bei Kontrollen in manchen Ländern tatsächlich angesehen. Ein aufgeklebtes Etikett löst sich mit den Jahren, die Plakette nicht.

The bit you actually touch

Inside, a COOLMAX lining handles sweat rather than just absorbing it: moisture is wicked outward and dries fast. Antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and it lifts out for washing.

Herausnehmbar und waschbar klingt selbstverständlich, ist es aber nicht — bei vielen Helmen dieser Klasse lässt sich nur das Kopfpolster entnehmen. Hier gehen Kopfpolster und Wangenpolster heraus, und beide vertragen Handwäsche.

What it is built for

Wer viel und weit fährt, merkt den Unterschied nicht am ersten Tag, sondern am dritten: An dem Punkt zahlen sich Feuchtigkeitsmanagement, ein ruhiger Sitz und ein Verschluss, den man mit Handschuhen bedienen kann, deutlich mehr aus als ein paar hundert Gramm weniger Gewicht.
