The 797 was the last air-cooled Monster, and that fact has become the reason people buy them now. A trellis frame, a Desmodue with its cylinders out in the airstream, and none of the electronic mediation that arrived with the liquid-cooled bikes — it is the version that still feels like the motorcycle the Monster originally was. Bikes owned for that reason get kept, and keeping a bike changes what you want from a service part. The Sprint Filter P08 CM61S is cleaned rather than replaced, and Sprint Filter designs it to last the life of the motorcycle.

The end of a line, and what that means for parts

When a version is the last of its type, its parts catalogue stops growing and eventually starts shrinking. A filter that is cleaned instead of replaced steps outside that problem entirely — there is no part number to chase in five years, because the element you already own goes back in. It also helps that CM61S is shared with twenty-three other Ducatis, from the Scrambler to the Monster 1200, so the part itself stays in production regardless of what happens to any single model.

An air-cooled twin shows restriction low down

The 803 cc Desmodue does its work in the middle of the rev range, which is where a loading filter is felt rather than measured. There is no high-rpm rush to distract from it: the bike simply becomes a little less immediate on the roll-on, and nothing on the dash mentions it.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry.
