The largest filtration variable inside an airbox is not the cloth. It is whether the element sits down properly on its frame. Air that slips past a lifted edge has been filtered by precisely nothing, and no specification on the box compensates for a millimetre of gap. That matters more here than on most machines, because the R nineT is a model people open up: it gets worked on, modified and reassembled more often than average, and each occasion is another chance to seat a panel badly. PM213S is moulded for the standard box, and getting it home deserves the attention.
Key Features
- Dry 80-micron polyester weave, supplied and run without any oil
- Rated flow of 5,050 l/m²/sec across roughly double the usual area
- Moulded to the series frame, so the sealing edge meets the housing all round
- No airbox modification, no repositioning, no change to the fuelling
- Cleaned with compressed air and returned to service instead of discarded
- Two years of warranty, the element built for the life of the motorcycle
Why seating outranks specification
Set the two against each other. Five microns between two Sprint Filter media alter what a filter admits by a small fraction of the load. A sealing edge standing proud on one corner admits unfiltered air continuously, for as long as it stays that way, and it announces nothing: the engine management trims around the extra air and the rider is told none of it. That is why this element is moulded to the original frame shape rather than cut generously and trusted to the lid.
What the weave is for
Once it is seated, the ordinary work is done well. Eighty microns of dry polyester returned 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton in the same test, carrying no oil that could migrate onto a sensor after a wash. Around twice the surface of a typical performance element means dust arrives spread out rather than concentrated. What none of this adds is power: the machine leaves the workshop with the output it arrived with.
Care and cleaning
Take the PM213S out and clean the sealing face first, because grit on the frame is what stops the panel closing next time. Then compressed air, from the clean side outward, so the load leaves by the route it entered. If the weave is beyond what air will lift, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will do it, rinsed until clear and left in moving air until dry. Heat is the one thing that ruins these elements: no hairdryer, no radiator, no flame. Refit dry and unoiled; the Downloads tab carries the sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R nineT built between 2021 and 2024, the roadster's final years, whose airbox the next generation inherited. Three machines carry this number: that R nineT, the R12 and the R12 nineT of 2025 and 2026. The earlier roadster of 2014 to 2016 does not belong to it, and neither does any R nineT Scrambler; the Scrambler kept its own part number through to 2024, so two bikes wearing the same name in the same year take different filters. The Fitment tab lists all three.
