DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-79 is a shock absorber spring rated at 35 N/mm, 290 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 00281-79
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 35 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 290 mm
  • 172.1 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow

Manufacture and Tolerance

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 290 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 35 N/mm.

Where This Rate Belongs

A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
