A lever guard is a loop that runs from the bar end around the outside of the lever, so that anything striking the bar from the side cannot push the lever in. It exists because of one specific accident: contact between two motorcycles, where a brake lever is operated by somebody else's fairing rather than by the rider.

Why Circuits Insist on Them
Most track day organisers and nearly all race series require lever guards, and the reason is not the rider who fits them. A rider whose front brake is applied for them, at speed, in company, is a crash that takes other people with it. The guard is a piece of shared safety equipment that happens to be bolted to one motorcycle.
On the road the risk is smaller but not zero, and the same device also protects the lever itself in a low-speed fall — which is the reason most road riders end up with one.
