Most riders learned to judge an air filter by looking at it. Hold the paper panel up to the light, see how much of the light gets through, decide. That method works on a surface, where whatever has been caught is sitting where the eye can reach it. It does not work on this element. The medium here is a nonwoven mat that stores its load through its own thickness, and the face of it is a poor witness to what is happening a millimetre further in.

Why depth breaks the old reading

Coarse particles stop near the entry face, finer ones travel further in before something holds them, and material behind the first fraction of a millimetre is still working long after the outside has taken on colour. Two consequences follow, and they point in opposite directions. A mat that already looks dirty may have most of its capacity untouched. A mat that still looks presentable may be close to done. Neither state announces itself, which is why the eye is simply the wrong instrument here and a written rhythm has to take over from it.

What the rhythm should be built on

Conditions, not distance. The mat fills in proportion to the volume of air pulled through it and the amount of solid matter in that air, so a fortnight behind harvest traffic counts for more than a wet month of commuting. Flow is the price: roughly a third of what the standard weave passes through the same area of clean material. That is a trade rather than a ranking — 14 microns is not a better answer than 80, only a different one — and neither medium makes a standard NK 800 faster. The gain is what does not reach the engine.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air, always from the clean side outwards, so the stored load leaves by the route it entered instead of being pushed deeper into the mat. Dust that has been damp and set hard lifts with lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until clear. Then moving air at room temperature and no shortcuts: no heat gun, no radiator, no flame.
