Four machines share this airbox — the MT-09, the Tracer 9, the XSR 900 and the R9 — and three of them have a single racing listing to consider. The R9 has two. One is the platform entry that covers all four; the other is this one, R272S F1-85, drawn against the R9 alone and priced at close to four times the standard element for the same motorcycle, or about twice the platform racing entry. When a catalogue takes the trouble to lift one machine out of a platform, it is worth working out what it means by that before paying the difference.

One machine lifted out of four

A listing drawn against a single model is a statement about intended use rather than about fitment: the same housing sits under a naked, a tourer and a retro, and none of those is offered this number. What follows for a buyer is procedural and short. Check that the entry in front of you names your machine and your model year, and check the marking on the panel currently in the airbox, since a previous Sprint Filter element answers the question outright. R272S F1-85 is what this one carries.

The cloth is not where the difference lies

Both racing entries for the R9 use the same 85 micron polyester at 15,000 litres per square metre per second, against 80 microns and 5,050 for the standard weave. So the choice between them is not a choice of filtration, and no version of it is a choice about output either: an element inside an unmodified airbox does not make a standard R9 faster, whatever it costs. A more open weave buys a very low resistance at full throttle and pays for it by letting more of the fine fraction through in every other minute of the ride.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face, aimed outwards, restores an open weave quickly and is the routine service. Where a wet paddock or a salted road has left a film, hand-warm water with a mild detergent lifts it; rinse until the water runs clear. The element then dries in open moving air alone, since heat guns, radiators and flames all finish polyester, and it goes back in dry and untreated.
