DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Versys 1000 is a four-cylinder tourer dressed for adventure: tall and comfortable, with a smooth engine from the Z1000 family and a fairing made for long days. Its owners often head for the mountains, and whatever climbs a pass must come down again. A long descent through a series of hairpins asks the front brake for dozens of applications in a few minutes. That is where the EDF021 comes in, an Accossato brake lever machined from aluminium for the restyled Versys 1000 of 2015 to 2018, with adjustable reach and a choice of blade lengths.

Key Features

  • Front brake lever for the Kawasaki Versys 1000, 2015 to 2018
  • Mounts on the original master cylinder
  • Distance to the grip adjustable
  • Long blade in blue, gold, green and orange for more leverage
  • Standard blade approximately 138 mm, offered in every colour
  • Machined from aluminium, anodised, black hub
  • Fixed one-piece blade

Construction and Material Quality

Anodising is an electrochemical process that thickens the thin oxide aluminium forms naturally and makes it able to take up dye, which is then sealed in. Accossato applies it to the EDF021 after machining the lever from aluminium on CNC equipment. The outcome is a colour that belongs to the surface instead of lying on it, so it cannot flake off the way paint can, a practical advantage on a tourer that may be ridden through rain for days on end. The hub is anodised black and holds the pivot and adjuster; the blade carries the colour and is fixed, with no hinge.

Coming Down the Mountain

Riders talk more about climbing passes than descending them, yet the way down is where the brake lever works hardest. Each hairpin needs a firm stop from the straight before it and a gentle release as the bike leans in, and a big pass can have dozens of them in a row. With luggage on board, the Versys 1000 needs more braking force for each of those stops. The fingers tire, and a lever that demands a stretch before every squeeze makes it worse. Set the EDF021 so that the blade meets the fingers in a relaxed curve, and each application starts sooner and with less effort. The long blade adds leverage and lets the whole hand share the work; for riders who prefer two fingers and keep the rest on the throttle, the short blade is the alternative. Choosing a lower gear on the descent lets engine braking hold the speed between bends, which spares the brakes and the hand at the same time.

Fitment and Compatibility

The years 2015 to 2018 on Accossato's list for the EDF021 match the restyled Versys 1000 introduced for 2015. The lever replaces the stock blade on Kawasaki's master cylinder. For the clutch, the ESK750 is listed for the same years and made in the same colours, so both levers of the Versys 1000 can be ordered to match.

Road Approval

Because no German ABE has been documented for the EDF021, it is sold for use on the racetrack.
