The cloth in this assembly is the racing polyester Sprint Filter also sells one rung down for the same airbox: 85 µm, 15,000 l/m²/sec, dry. What makes it the WorldSBK part is the carbon fibre frame carrying it. That is worth pausing on, because a team paying twice as much for identical filtration figures is not buying filtration at all. It is buying a part that holds its shape.

Filtration only counts if nothing goes round it

A rating applies to air that passes through the cloth. Air slipping past a frame gone slightly out of true is unrated and unfiltered, and it leaves nothing to notice: the engine runs, the readings look ordinary, and dust arrives anyway. That is why the structural half of a filter deserves as much attention as the material half, and why carbon here is a specification rather than a decoration. The frame is the part of this assembly that differs from the element below it, so it is also the part being paid for.

Built to be handled

A race element spends much of its weekend out of the airbox. Carbon holds its geometry through heat cycles, vibration and repeated removal, which is precisely the loading a moulded frame likes least. For road use this is more part than the job asks for, and it should be said plainly that it changes nothing about how the motorcycle goes: an insert filter does not make a standard machine noticeably stronger, and the R177S F1-85-SBK is no exception. Its argument is durability under handling, at the end of the catalogue where handling never stops.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air, applied to the clean face and pushed outward, does most of the work between sessions. When more has settled than air will lift, lukewarm water and a mild washing-up detergent take the rest, followed by rinsing until the water runs clear. Drying happens in open air and nowhere else: heat guns, radiators and flame deform polyester, and the carbon frame gains nothing from being warmed either.
