A racing weave comes with a condition attached, and it is usually the condition that kills the idea: it assumes an airbox opened frequently, by someone who inspects on a schedule rather than waiting for a service to come round. On most motorcycles that means fairing panels, a lifted tank and an afternoon. On a 2014–2019 Grom it means almost nothing at all — a small machine, a small element, a housing that is reached in minutes, and a bike that usually lives where the tools are. For once the precondition of PM180S F1-85 is cheap to meet.
Key Features
- P08 F1-85 racing specification: 85 µm filtration at a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Dry polyester with no oil at any stage, so nothing travels down the intake
- Deep pleating puts far more cloth into the standard airbox volume
- Drops into the original Grom housing unaltered, with no remapping needed
- Cleaned with compressed air and put straight back rather than replaced
- Rated for the life of the motorcycle, with two years of guarantee from purchase
Cheap supervision is not the same as a reason
It is worth separating the two, because the easy inspection makes the coarser cloth defensible rather than desirable. Eighty-five microns is a step back from the standard element’s eighty, taken in exchange for roughly three times the rated flow, and the step applies every hour the engine turns whether or not anyone is watching. Frequent checking means the element is caught before it is neglected; it does not put back what the specification gives away. Anyone looking at this listing for protection rather than flow is at the wrong end of the range; the finer PM180P14 at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec is the other end of the same trade.
Where the flow figure meets a small engine
The honest limit is the engine itself. A 125 draws what its capacity and its revs allow it to draw and no more, so the rated flow of the cloth is a ceiling that sits far above anything this machine asks for. That is not a criticism of the material — it is the same weave Sprint Filter supplies across the range — but it does mean the case for fitting it here rests on a competitive or track context rather than on a road ride. On a standard Grom no filter adds power; what an element can do is keep the intake restriction from drifting upward between services, and every cloth in this range does that.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face of PM180S F1-85, blowing outward, moves the load back out the way it came in. Where a season has left more than air will lift, hand-warm water with a mild detergent finishes the job; rinse until the water is clear and dry it fully in still air. Heat guns, exhausts and flames are off limits, and the element goes back dry with nothing applied to it. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
PM180S F1-85 covers two machines: the Honda Grom from 2014 to 2019 and the MSX125 from 2013 to 2019. Later Groms and MSX125s carry a different reference, so the year is what decides — check yours against the compatibility list on this page before ordering.
