Electro-Coloured, Not Painted

Dark style is an electrochemical process that changes the surface of the stainless itself. Nothing is laid on top, so there is no layer to chip where the clamp bites and nothing that lifts when the silencer runs hot.

On a machine that is meant to see gravel and green lanes that property is worth more than it sounds. A coated finish takes a stone strike badly; a coloured surface takes it the way bare metal does.

The Dakar Shape

Spark named the design after the desert rally and drew it accordingly: a plain squared case that follows the Tuareg's lines instead of fighting them, with no carbon cap and no ribbing. On a rally bike the silencer is supposed to read as equipment, and this one does.

In black it reads as even less. The Tuareg's trellis frame, subframe and bodywork are dark already, and a bare titanium can is the brightest object on the motorcycle; this version lets the shape register without the shine.

Keeping It Dark

Warm water and a soft cloth. Electro-coloured stainless is far more robust than a ceramic coating, but a scouring pad or an aggressive wheel cleaner will still dull it over time. Road salt comes off easily if it is not left to bake on over a winter.

What You Are Not Paying Extra For

649 euro, exactly what Spark charges for the titanium GAP0501TOM. That is unusual — most manufacturers charge for a finish — and it makes this a straight choice of appearance rather than a budget decision.

The weight, the mounting, the connecting pipe, the sound and the approval are all identical.

Approved, and Nothing Else to Do

Euro 5+ with a certificate issued by the Italian ministry after testing. The slip-on comes with its connecting pipe for the standard lateral position; the rest of the exhaust stays as Aprilia built it.

What Comes Off, and What Stays

Spark replaces the silencer and its connecting pipe. The manifold, the catalytic converter and the lambda sensor stay exactly where Aprilia put them, which is why the Euro 5+ certificate covers the motorcycle as a whole rather than the part in isolation.

Fitting is an hour with hand tools. The lateral mounting position is unchanged, so the pannier frames and the rear rack go back on without modification.

On a Rally Bike, Black Ages Well

A bare metal silencer shows every mile of a dusty road until it is cleaned. A dark surface hides the same film, which on a machine bought for gravel and long distances is less a styling argument than a practical one.
