Very little on a Katana was chosen without being looked at. The tank, the headlight, the tail, the wheels — it is a motorcycle assembled around what the eye approves of, and owners go on choosing that way long after the sale. The airbox element is the one component where the method stops working. A filter that looks grey may have years left in it, and one that looks presentable says nothing about what has already gone through it. So the PM236P14 is not a decision for the next service, made by lifting the lid and forming an impression. It is one to make beforehand, from the roads this bike is actually ridden on.
Key Features
- Dry special nonwoven media filtering at 14 microns, specified for dusty air
- Flow of 1,800 litres per square metre per second; the standard P08 passes 5,050
- Oil-free by design — nothing to re-oil, nothing drawn downstream of the element
- Backed by roughly twice the filtering surface of other performance filters
- Drops into the standard airbox in place of the original element, nothing else touched
- Cleaned and refitted season after season, with two years of warranty from purchase
Choosing from the route rather than from the lid
The roads a Katana sees are not average roads. These bikes are kept for chosen days: dry weather, secondary routes, passes with gravel washed across the apexes, gravel car parks at the meeting point, and a summer that supplies most of the year's riding. That is dusty air by composition rather than by volume, and it is what the fine nonwoven is specified for. If instead the mileage is mostly swept motorway and town, the case thins out and the P08 at 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second fits better. Both share the same airbox, so the question is genuinely open — it just has to be answered before the lid goes back on.
Where the finer media is paid for
Retention and flow move against each other: 14 microns holds more than 80 does and passes 1,800 litres per square metre per second instead of 5,050. That is a trade, not a ranking. This engine is one of the places the trade is felt rather than merely calculated: a litre-class four asks for air hardest at wide throttle and high revs, which on a Katana is not a rare event but half the reason it exists. Below that, through town and at touring pace, nothing about the intake changes. In the other direction the record stays straight: no element dropped into a standard airbox makes a stock motorcycle noticeably stronger. It only decides what it keeps out, and what it costs to breathe.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine for the PM236P14: aim it at the clean face and blow outwards. Where a dusty summer has left more, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will take it, rinsed until the water runs clear, then dried fully in open air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Suzuki Katana, 2022 to 2026, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox. Two machines share the element; both appear in the Fitment tab.
