A touring motorcycle meets dust in the places nobody plans for. The route is sealed from end to end, and then the last mile to the campsite, the rally field or the hotel above the lake is loose gravel that forty machines have already crossed. That short stretch does more to the inside of an airbox than the three hundred kilometres before it, and it is where PM187P14 earns its listing: a dry non-woven mat closing to 14 microns, in the standard K 1600 Bagger housing, cleaned with air.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven polyester, filtering down to 14 microns
- Flow rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, about a third of the standard weave through the same panel
- Carries no oil, so there is no film that could travel onto the sensors downstream
- Approximately twice the filtering surface of a typical performance element
- Takes the paper panel's place in the series airbox, with no modification and no remap
- Cleaned and refitted rather than bought again, with two years of warranty from purchase
Where a road machine's dust really comes from
Not from the roads it was drawn for. Sealed surfaces give up soot, brake dust and rubber, and an 80 µm weave deals with the coarse part of that without complaint. The fine mineral fraction behaves differently: it hangs above unsealed ground long after the wheel that lifted it has gone, and it is small enough to pass a coarse cloth. If a K 1600 spends even a handful of days a year on that kind of surface — and the ones that tour do — the medium is being chosen for those days rather than the others.
The price of closing the cloth
It is paid in air. The mat passes 1,800 l/m²/sec where the standard weave passes 5,050 through the same panel area, and no arrangement of materials improves retention and flow together. Finer holds more back and lets less through: a trade, not a ranking. The cost lands at wide throttle high in the rev range, held there, and a machine bodied and geared like this one spends very little of its life in that state — which is what makes the exchange affordable here. Neither medium is a power part. Nothing fitted inside a series airbox makes a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger.
Care and cleaning
A mat is cleaned much as a weave is, with a little more patience. Compressed air goes to the clean face of the PM187P14 and pushes the load back out through the surface that admitted it; working from the dirty side would only drive it further into the material. When a gritty week leaves more than air can shift, lukewarm water with mild detergent takes the rest, rinsed until it runs clear. It then dries in moving air in its own time — never with heat, never near a flame — and returns to the box dry and unoiled. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW K 1600 Bagger of 2017, as a direct replacement in the unmodified series airbox. The same housing carries the GT, the GTL and the GTL Exclusive, so this medium is available to every K 1600 on the list rather than to one variant of it. Four machines and their year spans are named under the Fitment tab.
