Whether 85 µm can be defended here is not a question about the filter but about the log book. A CBR650R serviced by the odometer — oil and valve clearances at the printed intervals, everything counted in kilometres — has no way of absorbing a coarser medium: what gets past arrives quietly and is settled long after anyone recalls what was fitted. A CBR650R run in track sessions and serviced by running hours has one. Same engine, same airbox, same part number, two answers.
Key Features
- Sprint Filter's racing weave: 85 µm at 15,000 l/m²/sec, near triple the flow of the P08
- Coarser than the P08's 80 µm, openly so — filtration is the currency the flow is bought with
- Polyester used dry throughout: no oiling, no re-oiling, no film to reach the intake
- A generous pleat pack, roughly double the cloth of a typical performance element
- Drops into the standard airbox where the paper panel sat, with no change to the fuelling
- Serviceable indefinitely rather than disposable, with two years of Sprint Filter cover
What five microns are worth, in both directions
Sprint Filter's own comparison measures both media on 100-micron particles, and there they sit close together: 93.13 % for the P08, 95.22 % for the F1-85. That is easy to misread as a verdict: at 100 microns both weaves are near their ceiling, and the aperture is what describes what slips by. Eighty-five microns passes a band that eighty holds, and the fine mineral fraction reaching bores, rings and valve guides lives at that end. What comes back in return is flow: 15,000 l/m²/sec against 5,050. Finer cloth holds more and passes less; coarser cloth passes more and holds less. A trade, not a ranking.
If the answer is yes, the rest of the bike has to follow
Of the two machines on this part number, the faired one can genuinely draw on 15,000 l/m²/sec: bodywork lets a rider hold the top of the rev range for a whole straight, then do it again. But taking the flow means accepting the filtration, and that only adds up on an hours-based regime — intervals counted in running time, the element checked between sessions, the top end opened on schedule rather than on symptoms. Without it, the PM201S F1-85 is the wrong member of the family: among the dearer elements in the catalogue, it buys capacity nothing calls on while giving away retention every kilometre. The P08 (80 µm, 5,050 l/m²/sec) is the road answer.
Care and cleaning
Between sessions the element comes out, is held to the light and cleaned: a part that is inspected, not ordered. Compressed air does most of the work, applied to the clean face so the dirt leaves the way it entered. If water is called for, use it lukewarm with a mild detergent and rinse until clear, then let it dry in moving air — no hairdryer, no radiator, no flame, since heat finishes this medium off. Refit it dry and bare.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Honda CBR650R, 2019 to 2026. The same element serves two motorcycles: this one and the unfaired CB650R of the same years. Both appear under the Fitment tab; the maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
