Most writing about performance air filters compares one aftermarket medium with another, which is a comfortable argument because both sides are for sale. The comparison that actually decides whether a PM188S belongs in a Valico 900 DS is the awkward one: this element against the paper panel it replaces. Paper is not a bad filter. It is a filter with one direction of travel, and that single property is the whole of the case being made here.

One direction, or two

A cellulose panel collects and never gives anything back. Every hundred kilometres moves its resistance the same way, the drift is invisible from the saddle because the fuelling quietly compensates, and the only correction available is a new part. The woven element drifts in exactly the same direction between services, and then goes back to where it began when it is blown through. Nothing about that makes a standard Valico 900 DS noticeably stronger, and it should not be sold as if it did. What it removes is the slow one-way decline, and the annual purchase that used to reset it.

What a racing record does and does not prove

By Sprint Filter's own account, its filters are the most used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock. That is a manufacturer's statement about where its media turn up, not an independent measurement, and no claim at all about a road machine in November. What it does support is narrower: this material and this routine have a long service history behind them. The measured figures are the part worth carrying into a decision, and here they are 80 microns, 5,050 l/m²/sec, and 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles against 76.42 for four-layer oiled cotton.

Care and cleaning

The element is regenerated, not consumed. Blow it out with compressed air from the clean side so the trapped material leaves by its entry route, which alone handles most of what a road machine picks up. Detergent and lukewarm water take care of the remainder, followed by a rinse until the runoff is clear. Then leave it alone until it is completely dry — no warm air, no flame, nothing that hurries it along — and refit the PM188S without treating it. The maintenance sheet is under Downloads.
