Of the four machines sharing this airbox, the V-Strom 800DE is the one built to leave the tarmac, and riders who bought it for that reason feed their engine air the others never meet. Gravel, forest track and a dry summer verge put fine dust into the intake in quantities a city commute does not approach. That makes the choice of medium a real decision rather than a detail. Choosing the weave for the surface you ride

Finer cloth holds back more and lets less through. That relationship is fixed, and it is why the range is a range rather than a ladder. The P08 filters at 80 microns and flows 5,050 litres per square metre per second. The P14 is a dry non-woven material at 14 microns flowing 1,800 — far more retention for a plainly lower flow, which is the right trade when dust is most of your riding. The T12 goes to 7 microns and 560 litres, for desert and extreme off-road. None is better than the others; they are aimed at different air. For an 800DE used as most are — commuting, touring, and gravel where the road runs out — the P08 is the balanced choice, with the P14 worth a look if your season is spent on dry tracks.

One part number, four different air supplies

The same element serves the roadster and the two other models built on this engine, because the airbox was drawn once for all of them. The housing does not know which machine it is in, so on the 800DE the inspection should follow the surface rather than the manual: a week of gravel asks more of an element than a month of motorway. The SM245S is a single layer of woven polyester, spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards, and it is serviced with compressed air alone — a compressor at any tyre shop or campsite will do. There is no spare cartridge to carry and no filter oil to find in the right grade far from home.

Care and cleaning

On a dusty trip, compressed air goes through the SM245S from the clean side outwards as often as seems useful. Where air will not do, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsing until the water runs clear.
