It is tempting to assume the largest engine in a range works its air filter hardest. On a Hayabusa that assumption does not survive the gearing. This is a motorcycle geared for speeds it is almost never ridden at, so at an ordinary cruise it turns over slowly — and an engine takes air in strokes, not in litres of displacement. Fewer strokes per kilometre means fewer passes of air through the element. What loads the panel in a Hayabusa is not the size of the engine but the hours it runs and the roads it runs on, and the Sprint Filter P08 PM70S is specified for that reading of the job.
Key Features
- One layer of woven polyester, run dry, with no oil to travel onto the intake sensors
- 80 microns of filtration at a rated 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Polyester thread from ø 22 microns upwards, the opening set by the weave, not pressed pulp
- About twice the working cloth of a usual performance element
- Fits the series airbox in the paper panel's place: no modification, no remap
- Cleaned and refitted rather than replaced, with two years of Sprint Filter cover
Strokes, not litres
Displacement says how much air an engine moves per revolution, not how many revolutions it turns to cover ground. Tall gearing shifts that arithmetic a long way, so a long-legged tourer can put a season through an element and load it less than a small, busy engine over the same distance. Neither the odometer nor the capacity on the frame plate tells you what condition the filter is in. Only looking does. That is the case for an element you can take out, inspect and put straight back.
Where the real load comes from
The other half is hours and air quality: long summer distances, holiday traffic, dry verges and roadworks. Those load a panel steadily whatever gear the bike is in, and a paper element is at its most open the day it goes in. Starting with roughly double the cloth means a given quantity of dust covers a smaller share of it, and compressed air puts the element back at its starting figure. Sprint Filter measured the dry P08 holding 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 for four-layer oiled cotton. What none of this does is make a standard Hayabusa noticeably stronger — no drop-in element does. Where the air is dustier the range weaves finer — P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres, P14 at 14 and 1,800, T12 at 7 and 560 — each holding back more and passing less.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine: hold the line to the clean face of the PM70S and drive the dirt back out the way it arrived. Where air leaves something behind, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Let it dry right through in moving air, never with heat and never near a flame, and refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Suzuki Hayabusa built from 2008 to 2019, seated in the unmodified series airbox. It is listed for that generation alone; the machine built from 2021 takes another element. See the Fitment tab.
