With 853 cc underneath it, the V7 Special stopped being a bike for short outings. It carries a passenger properly, holds a motorway speed without protest and covers real distance in a day — which means it now spends hours at a settled, continuous load rather than minutes at a lively one. That distinction matters more to an air filter than almost anything else about a motorcycle, and it is the reason to look closely at the panel rather than accepting whatever the service schedule specifies.
Key Features
- Woven polyester run dry — no coating to soften, migrate or need replacing
- 80-micron aperture, with 5,050 l/m²/sec quoted by the manufacturer
- Something close to double the working area of a standard performance element
- Exchanges for the factory panel in the series box, with no remap required
- Restored by cleaning for the whole life of the bike, not swapped out on schedule
- Two years of cover from the day of purchase
Peak figures describe a moment; touring is a duration
Flow numbers are taken over seconds. A rider crossing three hundred kilometres in a day never experiences those seconds — what they get is an hour at a constant throttle opening, then another one. Over a duration like that the pressure drop across the panel is not a momentary cost but a continuous one, and the airbox has had ample time to reach a settled temperature. Both facts point the same way: you want plenty of area so the continuous restriction stays modest, and you want nothing in the medium that warmth could mobilise.
The other half is what you are not carrying
A touring rider's real question about any service item is what has to travel with it. A paper panel means a spare in a pannier or a detour to a dealership that stocks Moto Guzzi. An oiled element means the spare plus a bottle of oil plus somewhere clean and unhurried to use it. The PM138S means neither: at any workshop, campsite or filling station with an air line, the routine is out, blown through, back in dry, and the intake is reset without anything No part of that is a power promise, because a panel cannot make one — the resistance you set off with is simply close to the resistance you still have at nightfall.
Care and cleaning
The everyday service is compressed air directed at the clean face and worked outwards. When that no longer achieves much, wash the panel in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsing repeatedly until the water comes away clear. Dry it in still room air until there is no moisture left anywhere in the cloth, keeping heat guns, radiators, exhausts and flames well clear throughout. It is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it afterwards. Sprint Filter's own note on the procedure is under Downloads.
