The Z650 leads a double life. Some are private bikes ridden a few thousand kilometres a year; a great many are training-school and rental machines, ridden by a different person every hour, in first and second gear, in a car park, for an entire season. Those two lives wear an air filter at completely different rates and neither of them is described well by a distance-based service interval. What both want is an element whose condition can be checked in a minute and restored on the spot — which is what the Sprint Filter P08 PM163S is: woven polyester, washable, and back at its original restriction after compressed air rather than after a purchase.

Hours, not kilometres

A machine used for training covers very little ground while its engine runs for a long time, often at low road speed where the air around it is at its dustiest and there is no clean airflow to speak of. The odometer badly understates what the intake has been through. A filter that is inspected and washed on a calendar the operator sets — rather than replaced when a mileage figure finally arrives — keeps a fleet honest, and does it without a stock of consumables sitting on a shelf.

Restricted or not, the intake is the same

Many Z650 are ridden in reduced-power form for licence reasons, and the intake hardware does not change for that. Nor does this element change anything about it: it is a direct replacement in the standard airbox, with no modification, no remap and no effect on the bike's homologation. Every machine keeps the paperwork it left the dealer with. The part is designed by Sprint Filter to last the life of the motorcycle, and warranted for two years from the date of purchase.

Care and cleaning

Routine service is compressed air from the clean side, blown outwards. A harder season earns a wash: lukewarm water, a mild detergent, and rinsing carried on until the water runs clear. After that the element dries fully in open air — never with heat, never with a flame — and is refitted dry. Oiling is not part of the procedure.
