Seven kilos. That is what Spark's 2-in-2 system takes off a Bonneville T120 — from 12.0 kg down to 5.0 — and it does it with a Euro 4 type approval and the original catalytic converter still in place.

Seven Kilos Off a Modern Classic

The T120's factory exhaust is a heavy thing: twin steel silencers, a large collector and a catalyst box, twelve kilos in total. Spark replaces the pipework and the cans and leaves the converter, and the system that goes back on weighs five.

On a motorcycle of around 230 kg wet that is a noticeable fraction, and almost all of it comes off low and to the sides — the mass that a rider feels when leaning the bike off its stand and when changing direction at low speed.

Approved, With the Catalyst

This is the part worth reading twice. The homologation was issued by the Italian Ministry of Transport and it covers the system as Spark supplies it, with the standard catalytic converter retained.

That is a different proposition from a decat racing system sold with a disclaimer. A T120 is a road motorcycle and its owner generally wants it to stay one; this exhaust is built for that rather than around it.

The Centre Stand Has to Go

Spark is explicit: the system is not compatible with the centre stand. If your T120 is fitted with one — and many are, it is a common factory option on a bike used for touring — you will have to remove it and live without it.

Better to decide that now than after the parcel arrives. If the centre stand is not negotiable, Spark's Trumpet slip-ons complete the Euro 4 range for this motorcycle and leave the collector and the stand alone.

Hot Road, and What the Shape Is

Two short reverse-cone silencers with angled, darkened outlets — the shape that came off American drag strips rather than European circuits. Spark calls the design Hot Road and the outline is deliberately blunt: a can that ends early and wide instead of tapering away.

On a T120, which is a large and rounded motorcycle, it is the detail that stops the bike reading as purely nostalgic.

Where the Performance Is

Spark places the improvement at low and medium revs, which is where a 1,200 cc parallel twin actually operates. A T120 makes its torque early and is ridden there; an exhaust tuned for high rpm would be helping in a place the engine is not designed to spend time.

Installation

Full system: collector and silencers both. The standard catalytic converter stays on the motorcycle and Spark's collector is built to mount with it — that is what the Euro 4 approval covers.

One restriction to settle first: the system is not compatible with the centre stand. If your T120 has one and you use it, this is not the exhaust for the bike.
