DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21079-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Free length 240 mm
  • Öhlins part number 21079-21
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 115 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost.

The Numbers That Matter

The 51 mm bore and 240 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 75 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
