Key Features

  • 148 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00696-10
  • Free length 290 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 52 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 290 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 52 N/mm

This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Installation

Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
