DescriptionThe whole story▼

The CB500X is a travelling motorcycle for people who do not need a large one. It carries luggage without complaint, sits at motorway speeds, and turns onto an unsurfaced road without drama, which is why so many of them have been ridden a very long way from home. Trips like that involve checks in unfamiliar places: a hotel car park, a ferry queue, a lay-by with the tools spread on the seat. Accossato's FP004 is the aluminium oil filler cap for those moments, M20x2.5, in eight colours.

Key Features

  • Oil filler cap for the Honda CB500X, 2013 to 2018
  • M20x2.5 thread, the dimension Accossato quotes
  • Aluminium, CNC-machined, anodised finish
  • Eight colours: blue, green, black, orange, red, silver, titanium, gold
  • Fits other machines whose filler uses the same size
  • Knurled edge gives a firm grip with cold or wet hands
  • No German ABE available; catalogued for competition use

Construction and Material Quality

The FP004 is machined from aluminium on CNC equipment and anodised afterwards, and the anodised colour is formed in the surface of the metal, which is worth having on a bike that sees rain, dust and sun in the same fortnight. Eight colours are offered. Accossato publishes one dimension only, the M20x2.5 thread, because that is what decides whether the cap suits an engine; the applications on its own list are covered, and the maker adds that other motorcycles with the same filler size can take the cap too. For a touring rider, the practical point is a metal cap with a grip that works in gloves.

Checking the Level Away From Home

On the road the conditions are never ideal, which makes the order of the work more important rather than less. Find level ground and let the CB500X stand until the engine has cooled properly; a check made ten minutes after arriving tells you very little. Hold or support the machine as the owner's manual describes when reading the level, even if that is awkward in a gravel car park. Before the filler is opened, wipe the area around it, because touring collects dust and insects on every surface of an engine and the opening is the one place none of it belongs. If oil has to go in, add it in small amounts and check between each, using the grade the manual names; a shop in an unfamiliar country may not stock it, so many riders carry a small bottle with them. Turn the FP004 back in by hand until it seats. Before you ride off, look underneath for anything wet, and then get on with the journey.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the FP004 for the CB500X from 2013 to 2018. The M20x2.5 thread is what governs fit, so other motorcycles with that filler size can use the cap as well; our catalogue shows it for the Hypermotard 950, the Monster 795 and the Diavel. If the engine cover has been changed or you do not know what cap is currently fitted, measure the thread before ordering.

Road Approval

For the FP004 we hold neither a German ABE nor a test mark, and the cap is accordingly sold for racing and competition purposes.
