DescriptionThe whole story▼
A mountain village with a steep main street, a hotel car park on a slope, a ferry ramp: touring holidays are full of places where a fully loaded bike has to move off uphill. On the California Touring ABS 1400, with panniers packed and a passenger aboard, that manoeuvre depends on the clutch and the rear brake working together. The Accossato ESC023 is a clutch lever for this bike from 2014 to 2021. The aluminium lever takes the place of the standard one at the original clutch mounting, and its reach is adjustable.

- Hub anodised black; blade in one of seven colours

Construction and Material Quality
Holding a heavy bike on a slope asks for a clutch lever that does exactly what the fingers tell it. The ESC023 is milled from a single aluminium blank and has no folding joint, so the only movement is the blade swinging on its pivot. Anodising gives the hub its black finish and the blade its colour; the reach adjuster sits in the hub, next to the pivot. The machined surfaces are consistent from one lever to the next, so a brake and clutch lever ordered together look like a set.
Moving Off Uphill, Fully Loaded
The classic hill-start method works well on the California 1400 Touring. Hold the bike with the rear brake pedal under your right foot, keep the left foot on the ground, and both hands are free for throttle and clutch. Select first gear, add a little throttle and let the clutch out slowly until you feel the rear of the bike settle as the drive takes up. Only then release the rear brake, feeding in more clutch while opening the throttle further. The critical moment comes as the brake lets go and the clutch takes over holding the loaded bike on the slope. That phase lasts a second or two, and the fingers must hold it steadily; a lever that sits too far out makes them tremble, while one set closer allows a firm, controlled hold. Setting the ESC023's reach with your touring gloves on, before the trip, leaves one less thing to think about in that steep village street.
Fitment and Compatibility
For the California Touring ABS 1400, the ESC023 runs from 2014 to 2021 in Accossato's list, drawn from two Touring entries in its catalogue. The EDF023 brake lever for the same bike ends a year earlier, in 2020. The clutch lever replaces the original at the Touring's own mounting. Colours and lengths: all seven in the standard size, short blades in blue, gold, green, orange and silver, long blades in blue, gold, green and orange.
Road Approval
Without a documented German ABE, the ESC023 is sold for use on the race track.
