Sprint Filter's standard-size extreme element for these boxers is catalogued for GS models and nothing else. This one is not. The same seven-micron mat, in the double-area version, is listed for the R, the RS and the RT as well — the naked roadster among them. Nothing mechanical explains the difference, because these machines were always sharing one airbox. The longer list says that this part number is indexed by housing rather than by an opinion about where the motorcycle gets ridden.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven polyester with a filtration rating of 7 microns
- Filtering surface doubled against the standard-size element, as the catalogue states it
- Flow rated at 560 l/m²/sec of material, against 5,050 for the standard weave
- Oil-free from new and after every wash, with nothing to migrate forward
- Drops into the series airbox where the original panel sat, no remap required
- Cleaned with compressed air and reused; two years of warranty from purchase
A list drawn round a box
Fitment lists in this catalogue do two different jobs and it pays to know which one you are reading. Some are statements about what physically seats — those follow the housing and take every machine that shares it. Others are statements about where a medium is thought to belong, and those leave names out on purpose. The standard-area extreme element takes the second form; this one takes the first. For an R 1200 R owner the practical difference is that the strict medium is available here without an argument about whether a naked roadster ought to want it.
Whether it ought to
Usually not, and that deserves saying plainly. Seven microns costs about eight parts of flow in every nine against the standard cloth, charged every second the engine runs, and it is bought for air that stays loaded for hours — not for a dry verge. If your R spends its years on sealed roads, the standard weave is the better balance and choosing it is no compromise. The doubled area is earned by a roadster that genuinely follows the GS models onto unsurfaced ground. Either way it is not a power decision: an element inside an untouched airbox leaves a standard R 1200 R exactly as strong as it was.
Care and cleaning
Nothing about the routine changes with the larger element except the minutes it takes. Compressed air is directed at the engine-facing surface and pushed outwards, so the load leaves by the route it came in; from the dirty side it would only be seated deeper. Where a long dusty stretch has loaded the mat past what air will retrieve, hand-warm water with a little mild detergent finishes it. Then it dries in open, moving air and only that — heat guns, ovens and flames destroy the medium — and the K142T12 returns to the box dry. The servicing instructions are in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1200 R of 2014 to 2018, replacing the standard panel in an unaltered airbox. Six machines are catalogued for this element: the whole 1200-generation boxer family and the R 1250 GS. The Fitment tab lists each of them with its years.
