Most part numbers in this BMW listing answer to a family. One airbox, five or eight motorcycles, an element drawn so that it suits all of them at once. PM278S is not one of those. The list underneath it holds a single machine, the M 1000 RR of 2025 and 2026, and then stops. No roadster sibling, no faired tourer, no earlier model year reaching back for the same frame. That is worth settling before a word is said about cloth, because a list of one changes what you should ask of the part.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave in a single layer, filtration at 80 microns
- Bench figure of 5,050 l/m²/sec, the standard flow of the range
- Runs unoiled, so nothing can travel downstream to the sensors
- Around double the filtering area of a usual performance element
- Series airbox, series fasteners, no modification and no remap
- Washed and put back rather than bought again; warranty runs two years
What a single-machine listing means
It means nothing had to be reconciled. An element shared across a family answers to the common ground between several boxes; this outline, this depth and this sealing face had one box to satisfy. The cloth is the range standard: dry polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upward, screening at 80 microns and rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec. Read those two figures as a pair that always moves in opposite directions. A finer medium holds back more and passes less, a coarser one does the reverse. It is a trade, never a ranking, and the P08 sits where road use and track use overlap, which is the pair of jobs this motorcycle is sold for.
The part of the claim that has to go
No insert in a standard airbox makes a series M 1000 RR noticeably stronger, and any description hinting otherwise is selling the wrong thing. What remains is undramatic and real. Intake resistance starts lower and stays nearer its starting point through the interval, because roughly twice the area spreads a season of grime more thinly. Retention is measured rather than argued: 93.13 per cent of 100-micron particles here, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton in the same comparison.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the work on PM278S, blown from the clean face outward through the side that collected the load; from the dirty side you would only drive that load deeper into the weave. When a hard summer leaves more behind than air will shift, lukewarm water and a mild detergent finish the job. Let it dry in moving air and in its own time. Never a heat gun, never a flame, because heat is what actually kills one of these. It goes back dry and unoiled, and the maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
One motorcycle: the BMW M 1000 RR built in 2025 and 2026, as a direct replacement in the unmodified series airbox. The earlier M 1000 RR of 2021 to 2024 carries a different Sprint Filter number, so the name on the tank is not enough to order by; the year is part of the answer. The Fitment tab lists the machine and its year span exactly as Sprint Filter publishes it.
