DescriptionThe whole story▼
The year on the registration document decides this purchase. Akrapovic makes two converter sets for the ZZR1400 — this one for 2012 to 2015 and P-KAT-054 for 2016 to 2020 — and they are not interchangeable despite the motorcycles looking identical.
Key Features
- A set of two converters, one for each exhaust path
- For the 2012 to 2015 ZZR1400 and ZX-14R
- The 2016 onwards machine takes P-KAT-054 instead
- Honeycomb metal carrier with palladium, rhodium and platinum
- An EC approval is recorded against it
Why Two Sets Exist
Kawasaki updated the ZZR1400's emissions equipment during the production run without changing the bodywork, so two machines that look the same from ten paces need different converters. The model year is the only reliable way to tell them apart.
Ordering by model name alone is how the wrong box arrives. Check the first registration date, and where that is ambiguous, the frame number settles it.
Two Converters, One Number
The 1,441 cc inline four splits its exhaust into two paths and each needs its own converter. That is what SET means in the part number, and it is why the price is what it is for what looks like a small component.
Fitting one and leaving the other would put half the exhaust gas through nothing at all.
What Is Inside
A metal honeycomb coated with palladium, rhodium and platinum. Exhaust gas passing across those surfaces gives up its carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons, which leave as carbon dioxide and water vapour.
The precious metals are most of the price, and they cannot be inspected. A converter that has been overheated or contaminated looks exactly like a working one, which is the argument against buying used.
An Ageing Hyper-Tourer
A 2012 ZZR1400 is now well over a decade old, and converters do not last forever. Thermal cycling cracks the substrate; a period of running rich coats it. Both are realistic on a motorcycle of this age and both show up as a failed emissions test rather than as anything visible.
That makes this as much a maintenance part as a tuning one.
Matched to the Akrapovic System
Akrapovic describes its converters as performance oriented rather than generic — sized to preserve the flow and the sound its own exhausts are built around. The published figures for the ZZR1400 slip-on assume this converter rather than a universal replacement.
The Fastest Production Motorcycle of Its Day
The ZZR1400 held that title for years, and the machines from this period are the ones bought new by riders who wanted it and kept by owners who still do. They are maintained rather than traded, which is why parts for a fourteen-year-old model still have a market.
A converter is the least glamorous item on that list and one of the few that eventually has to be replaced.
Not an Exhaust
Two converters and nothing else. No silencer, no headers, no link pipe.
Road Approval
An EC approval is recorded against this set. It is an emissions component, and its job is to keep the exhaust it sits in compliant.
