Dainese · The second skin

The second skin

The leather so thin, and so exactly cut, that a champion forgets he is wearing it. Inside Dainese's half-century obsession with fit.

The craft

Cut, not printed.

A Dainese suit begins as a hide and a paper pattern. Lasers cut the panels to the millimetre, then a human takes over — shaping, skiving and stitching leather thin enough to move like a second skin, yet strong enough to survive a slide at racing speed. A machine can be precise. Only a craftsman can be exact.

Not all leather is equal. The flagship Mugello is cut from kangaroo hide — pound for pound stronger and lighter than cowhide, so the suit can be thinner without giving up abrasion resistance. The Misano uses full-grain D-Skin cowhide. Either way the aim is the same: the least material that will still save you.

One tailor. Every champion.

The bond

One tailor. Every champion.

Valentino Rossi won all nine of his world titles in Dainese leathers — and every set was cut and hand-stitched by a single master tailor who knew his body better than a doctor. Fifteen-time world champion Giacomo Agostini wore the brand back in the mid-1970s. That is what a second skin really means: made for one rider, and no one else.

The best protection is the kind you forget you are wearing.

Thin, supple, exact — leather that moves with the rider instead of against him.
