Filtration ratings read like gates, and they are not. When Sprint Filter states 80 microns for the P08 it is describing where the medium's retention becomes reliable, not a door that shuts on everything larger and opens for everything smaller. The company's own comparative measurements make the point plainly: the P08 holds back 93.13 per cent of the 100-micron particles presented to it, a four-layer oiled cotton element 76.42 per cent of the same. Both figures are proportions. What separates a good filter from a poor one is not that one lets nothing through, but how large that proportion is and whether it is still the same proportion next year. On an engine of this size, running for a decade or more of ordinary use, the second half of that sentence is what decides how the bore looks at the end.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave, never oiled, so nothing can be washed out of it or carried downstream
- P08 medium: 80 microns of filtration, airflow figure 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Holds back 93.13 per cent of 100-micron particles, against 76.42 per cent for four-layer oiled cotton
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns, woven to a calibrated aperture
- Direct replacement in the standard airbox: no modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable, with a two-year warranty from the date of purchase
What the two numbers describe
They are easily confused. The ø 22 microns is the diameter of the polyester thread itself; the 80 microns is the aperture the weave leaves between those threads. A thin and strong thread is what allows a calibrated opening to be woven at all, and it is why a single layer can be asked to do the whole job instead of three or four layers stacked so that their imperfections do not line up. The airflow figure follows from the same geometry: 5,050 l/m²/sec through a medium that is one layer thick and mostly open.
A rating that survives the service
An oiled medium's performance depends on its film, and the film depends on whoever last serviced it: how much oil went in, how evenly it was spread, how long it was left to settle before the element went back. That is a variable in the engine's protection which has nothing to do with the filter's design. A dry medium has no such variable. It is cleaned, dried and refitted, and the specification it returns to is the one it was built to. Nothing can leave it in service either, so no film finds its way onto an air sensor or a throttle body.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side outwards is the routine service for PM183S. Where a season has been hard on it, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and let it dry completely in open air, never with heat and never near a flame. It goes back in dry. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
