Most air filter listings turn on a date: somewhere in a model's life the intake changes, the part number splits, and the buyer's question becomes which side of that line their machine falls on. The K 1600 range never did that. PM187S covers a GTL Exclusive from 2013 to 2016, and it covers the other three listings across every year they were built, the Exclusive's four seasons sitting entirely inside the GTL's nine. For once the date in the papers changes nothing about what to order.

One housing, four motorcycles

BMW put the differences into everything except the intake. Bodywork, equipment, seat and luggage separate these machines; the box holding this panel does not. The fitment list therefore reads as four entries and behaves as one: the choice is never which part number but which medium goes into the frame. Three are offered and they differ only in cloth: the 80 µm weave here, a 14-micron non-woven for dust, and an 85 µm racing weave. Finer holds back more and passes less; coarser does the reverse. It is a trade with a direction, not a ranking with a winner.

Why the standard weave is the default

The P08 sits where these machines actually live. Its rated 5,050 l/m²/sec is more air than a touring six asks for on the road, and its 80 µm aperture holds a quoted 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles — enough for tarmac, and kept there by washing rather than replacement. What it will not do is add performance: a drop-in panel does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, whatever badge the tank carries. It lowers the restriction a little and, more usefully, stops it creeping upward.

Care and cleaning

The PM187S is regenerated, not replaced. Compressed air from the clean face outwards clears an ordinary road load in a couple of minutes, always against the direction the dirt came in. When air stops being enough, usually after a season of mixed weather, lukewarm water and mild detergent will wash it, rinsed until nothing further comes out. It then dries in moving air at its own pace, well away from any heat source or flame; heat rather than dirt is what ends a polyester element. Back in dry, and unoiled for good. Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive as listed from 2013 to 2016, dropping straight into the series airbox. The Exclusive is the shortest of the four spans and the only one enclosed by another, which is why the equipment level identifies the machine rather than the year.
