DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-10 is a shock absorber spring rated at 52 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Free length 230 mm
- 126 mm of usable stroke
- Öhlins part number 00698-10
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 52 N/mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
How Öhlins Makes Them
Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.
Size and Rate
The 57 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 52 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Where This Rate Belongs
A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.
Applications
Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it.
Fitting
Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
