DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 21180-01 is a shock absorber spring rated at 32 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Öhlins part number 21180-01
- Measured spring rate 32 N/mm
- Free length 220 mm
- Inner diameter 46 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Powder-coated black
- 120 mm of usable stroke
Manufacture and Tolerance
The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.
Dimensions
Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 220 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 32 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
How a Rear Spring Works
Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.
Installation
A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
