DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-34 is a shock absorber spring rated at 100 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 100 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 21040-34
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • 76 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

Dimensions

The 51 mm bore and 160 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 100 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.

Installation

Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
